Board Bootcamp: Understanding Nonprofit Financials

Drive your board’s leadership skills and financial literacy in our upcoming Board Bootcamp session. Gaining a true understanding of nonprofit financial statements and making strategic decisions as a result can increase your organization’s long-term impact. In this virtual session we will explore the basic elements of common nonprofit financial statements and will identify tips to better understand what they mean and how they can be used to determine the health of an organization. In addition, we will review basic “financial jargon” and will discuss the nuances of accounting in the nonprofit sector. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of how they can use this financial information to make timely, strategic decisions. The intended audience for this session is nonprofit executives, board members and emerging nonprofit leaders.

About the presenters:
Dr. Jenny Ulla is Assistant Professor in the Department of Accounting at Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Ulla’s teaching interests are in governmental and nonprofit accounting. Her research focuses on judgment and decision-making in auditing and accounting contexts using experimental design with specific interests in the impact of technology.
Haley Wright is a manager of Client Accounting and Advisory Services at CliftonLarsonAllen serving nonprofit clients. Previously, she served as Chief Financial Officer and Controller at Cunningham Children’s Home. Haley holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Millikin University and a Masters of Professional Accountancy from Indiana University Bloomington.
